Yesterday, July 1st, was Canada Day. We loaded the kids in the van and headed into Whitehorse for the festivities. There was a parade and then everyone filed into Shipyards Park. There was wonderful smelling food and prizes for the kids. They had three of these huge sheet cakes. The words on this one were made of blueberries. I'm told there was a swearing-in ceremony for new Canadians, but we left before that.
Julie and I had laughed about how parades make us cry. Call us crazy, but, sorry, they sometimes do! But this one made us laugh 'til we nearly snorted! This charming Mountie was in his chariot, leading the parade.
He was pulled by this authoritative-looking, awe-inspiring police car. It had a siren that sounded, for all the world, like a frightened ghost. That had me giggling to start with. Then, just as it got in front of us, the jallopy stalled. It could not, would not start. I felt quite sorry for the uniformed driver. How embarrassing! The marchers directly behind him kept high-stepping in place, until someone, with a sweep of his arms, directed the parade around him. The Bear Mountie just kept waving.
There were bag pipers....
And proper Mounties....
And Mr. and Mrs. Yukon.
